On April 5th, Melanie will chair a webinar on section 11(b) (the Charter right to trial within a reasonable time), at the Canadian Bar Association. The program will include panelists from across Canada, and include a “cross-country check-up” on on how the courts have been treating “Covid-related” delay, among other topics. Further description below:
“This program will provide an update on the s. 11(b) Charter right to trial within a reasonable time and the many issues which have been resolved since the 2017 Jordan decision.
Particular focus will be given to issues that have arisen in the context of COVID-19 related-delays, including how these delays have been characterized to date, and how they may be addressed in the future as COVID-19 becomes a more anticipated and regular factor in scheduling criminal cases.”
